Revalidation

NMC Nurse Revalidation

The purpose of revalidation is to improve public protection by ensuring that nurses are keeping up to date with their chosen field or speciality to ensure safe and effective practice. The NMC introduced revalidation to ensure nurses maintain consistent fitness to practice standards and high quality of nursing care in the UK. Nurses who have revalidated are guaranteed to provide the highest level of care to their patients and keep knowledge and skills up to date, which, in turn, assists with their career development and delivery.

The NMC

Under the guidelines set by the NMC, nurses and midwives must revalidate every three years on the date they are due to apply for the renewal of their registration. In order to ensure the successful renewal of license, the NMC requires the medical professional to demonstrate
compliance with the following criteria:
● 450 Practice Hours – 900 if you are dual registered
● 35 hours of CPD – 20 hours must be participatory
● 5 practice-related feedback from clients patients and/or colleagues
● 5 reflective accounts – can be based on CPD, feedback or experience
● Reflective discussion – must be with another nurse or midwife

● Confirmation – must be confirmed by an appropriate person.

You will also need to confirm to the NMC:

● Health and character – you must confirm that you are capable of
practice
● Indemnity – you must confirm that you have indemnity coverage in
place

Doctors Revalidation

Revalidation is the process for doctors to positively affirm to the General Medical Council (GMC) that they are up to date and fit to practice. It applies to all licenced doctors in the UK working in the NHS and the private sector and all branches of practice. Doctors need to meet the standards set by the GMC, taking into account guidance for their speciality, to maintain their licence to practice.

The GMC requires you to:

● Connect with your Designated Body
● Ensure you are appraised annually
● Collect colleague and patient feedback once per revalidation cycle
● Revalidate once every 5 years

Designated Body

Your Designated Body should be the agency, organisation or the trust that you have worked with the most within the last 12 months or are currently employed full time with.

If you work in more than one organisation, you may find it helpful to:

● Make a list of the organisations that you’ve worked for during the last 12 months
● Consider the amount of time and clinical practice you do at each of your places of employment
● Consider the basis on which you are employed e.g whether you are employed, hold practicing privileges or have another type of contract
● Speak to these organisations if you do not know your employment status
● List any membership organisations you are registered with

Only UK organisations can be a designated body. If you are working overseas or not carrying out medical practise please contact the GMC or click here to find your appropriate connection.
